Bob Gwinn

I just spent a few hours looking for a few photos to get copied for Roger La Rue (Walrus) and Bob's new office... and we found out that we are missing a pile of pictures. Here's the hard part, we know that they were taken to the San Diego Reunion and there were people around looking at our photos and sharing their photos.

The photos that are missing that come to mind were encased in photo album type protector sheets which were taken out of the photo album. Others were in yellow plastic 3x3x1/4 cases and then there were some that were loose. So how would we get this information out to the guys so that whomever ended up with the pictures knows who to return them to?

Fred Neiser

In my April VFW magazine I noted your name re the 1st recon. bn. reunion Sullivan, my cousin thru marriage, would only discuss his activities from 1941 thru his final discharge, when I "dragged" it out of him. Including various island invasions during WW2 thru Korea and Viet Nam. If your organization has any background on him I would appreciate anything you can provide. Art died from brain cancer, probably from agent orange. His wife died about 3-4 years ago. He had a son and daughter who really did not get to know him since he was gone most of the time when they were growing up, I remember him as a true "hero" from his didication. After he retired he got rid of most of his marine collection. When I was stationed in Tokyo and Korea, many years ago, I had the opportunity to spend a full day with him in Tokyo The last time I saw him before he died he was suffering from brain cancer. From all of 194l thru Viet Nam he never was wounded--However, he went to mass every day that he could. Also, he would never let his wife see him off when he was heading overseas. After he died I could not find any photos of him --I have been searching for something to hang onto for memories. If you have anything I would appreciate it if you could tell me how I can find something . He was in Iran at the time of the revolution and they ran for the plane with whatever they could carry Fred Neiser,

1st Force Helmet

I have in my possession a combat helmet originally owned by a gunnery sergeant from C Co. 1st Force Recon, Moose Peak Team. I can’t quite make out his name. It looks like it could be Denis or Dents? There is no first name. On the helmet camouflage cover are the words Camp Reasoner and Charlie Ridge. Can anyone help me….it would be wonderful to track down the correct name and ultimately, if possible, the vet. I doubt I mentioned in my previous email that the helmet mentions the date (1968) after “Charlie Ridge”. Also on the camouflage cover is the name “Whitteker” (hand printed) and the stenciled numbers 61 and 322. In the case of the stenciled numbers I would be curious if they have any significance peculiar to Marine unit designation. The last name of the gunny, as I mentioned, could be Davis, Dents or or Denis. I know this is all a real long shot…but the research is fascinating. I’ve learned a lot about your old unit in the process. It may just turn out we’ll never know….still it’s a 1st Force Marine helmet and I will honor it as such. I did make another discovery though…wadded up between the helmet and liner I found an NLF one dong note…it’s been there a looooong time. Sure wish this helmet could talk to me. I take my collection of helmets and other battlefield paraphernalia to local church groups and schools to educate our youth about the sacrifices of our countries servicemen and women. The recon helmet will be part of that display. I wish I had one of your folks bush covers to go with it as I realize you guys rarely worked the bush with a helmet on. I was a 9th infantry grunt platoon leader (SOP for us to wear a helmet) and I swear I can still feel that hot, sweaty, vice-like discomfort of the steel pot when I just look at one!! Mike Walsh

Dear fellow Marine: My name is Mike Walsh and I am a former Marine (Active Duty 0351 - 1984 - 1988) and a member of Marine Corps League Detachment #298. This website www.marineneon.com is a project I have been working on with my company for several months. It is a Marine Corps Emblem (Eagle, Globe, & Anchor) Neon sign. I looked at several color variations and this best depicted the EGA in neon. I had one produced for myself and for our MCL Detachment Hall and thought why not offer up to fellow Marines (i.e Active duty Marines, Former Marines, Families of Marines, etc.) Please take a look and forward and /or post to anyone you think may be interested in this offer. I appreciate your consideration. Semper Fi

if you ever get any information on a guy from South Louisiana by the name of Wayne Cheramie, Marine Force Recon, (not sure if he was with the 1st Marine Force Recon), I'd sure appreciate it. He would've been in Vietnam in 1966 - 67 time frame. He's a buddy that I played football with @ South LaFourche. (the South Fork in French Acadiene). I lost track of him, as well as did his family, in the early 70's. They haven't heard from him since. He'd be about 58 years old, if he's still alive.

Looking for anyone who served with me in Korea, all volunteer Recon Plt. 3rd Bn. 7th Marines Sept. thru Nov. 1952

Paul Young

Do you have any info on a David McCoy, who served with Recon in 1968. I'm trying to help him with a VA claim, but his DD 214 is the sketchiest I've ever seen and gives no information as to where he served.
His DD 214 is a disaster, no question. I don't know if his original was lost in the suffle, but this one looks like it was put together just prior to discharge by someone back in the states. He states he was with Recon and was in Charlie Co in 1968. Also states he was in a helicopter crash in which several people were killed. He appears to be a genuine article, but his memory is just about zero. He doesn't BS, just says he doesn't remember when asked questions about the Bn. I've asked a couple of guys to look into patrol reports, etc. Anyway, if you would, please do put his name out in your next message and we'll see what happens.

Chris Brady

My name is Chris Brady. I served in 1st Force in 68 AND PART OF 69 IN Da NANG when we were billeted near you guys. I am looking for a guy named John De long whom I served with at MCRD earlier. He was a radio operator and at one point was wounded on patrol. Another guy I served with at MCRD AND WAS IN 1ST Recon Battalion was Sgt. Bob Pleager who later switched to 1ST Force and was killed on patrol. If there is anyone who served with either of these two guys, I would like to hear from them.

Richard Brown

Looking for Edward Miller from Milwaukee, WI, Geronimo Mercado from New Jersey, Angel Castro from the Bronx, D.A. Jensen from Iowa, are just a few of the guys i am looking for. They are in my address book from 1968 to 1970 vietnam. If you remember me, contact me

Thank you for your help with trying to locate people that may be able to help Jerry Johnson. Since my last message we have found out a lot more, specifically that the incident involved a CH 46 crash on September 7, 1970. According to the Situation Reports from 1st Recon Bn, two patrol teams from Charlie Company (Stone Pit & Aunt Mable) were to be inserted on September 7, 1970 in support of Operation Imperial Lake. The Operation Order for this insertion was classified above Confidential and we were unable to review it. According to its patrol report, team Stone Pit (7 USMC + 1 USN) had been extracted from a week long patrol on September 6. The other team, Aunt Mable (4 USMC + 4 ROK/RNV) had been on a two day patrol and was extracted on September 5.On September 7, the two teams were aboard a CH 46D, Callsign Chatterbox 6 (Bureau #154793) from HMM 262. While trying to abort a landing in a bad landing zone the helicopter lost power, slid down a hill, rolled on its side and began burning. Apparently the two patrol teams were carrying large amounts of plastic explosive which was left in the helicopter when they departed the aircraft. None of the aircrew was seriously injured while there were two USMC injuries (1 burned and 1 back injury). The Marine with burns on his face was, according to Jerry Johnson who was the only "Doc" on the mission, evacuated to the Hospital Ship for treatment.Based on a summary of the aircraft incident, Patrol Reports, and Monthly Personnel Musters for Charlie Company and HMM 262 we believe that the following individuals were, or could have been, aboard Chatterbox 6 when it crashed on September 7, 1970.HMM 262
Pilot LTCOL Gerald S. Pate (CO, HMM 262)
Charlie Company
1LT Anthony J. Pack (Company Commander)
PVT Junius Portalis (back injury)
Team Stone Pit
SGT Sean P. Kelly
SGT D. D. Cantrel
CPL Charles D. Nelson (Burns on face)
CPL Ben S. Upshaw
LCPL Bobbie Dunn
LCPL Craig J. Kielich
PVTJohnny W. Jacques
HM3 Jerry B. Johnson
Team Aunt Mable
CPL Larry Grant
CPL S. Gonzales
CPL Anthony Nebbitt
LCPL John T. Hannan
3 ROK/RVN Marines
We have not identified, as yet, the crew of Chatterbox 6 which would have had a co-pilot, crew chief and two gunners. According to the 1st Recon Bn Situation Report for August 7, there were 15 Marine Corps/Navy personnel aboard Chatterbox 6. Jerry Johnson specifically remembers that 1LT Pack was aboard the helicopter, so it is possible that one or more members of the Patrol Teams from the previous patrol were not on this mission. The only ones that we are absolutely sure were aboard the helicopter are Pate, Pack, Johnson, Nelson and Portalis (the latter two were the only members of Charlie Company injured on September 7, 1970).
According to the Charlie Company muster and 1st Recon Bn monthly reports, Charlie and Delta Companies were inactivated on September 10 in accordance with "Keystone Robin Redeployment (Phase IV)". As a result, the members of Charlie Company listed above were either redeployed to CONUS (Dunn, Grant, Hannan, Jacques, Nebbitt) or reassigned to one of the battalions remaining companies. 1LT Pack was transferred to H&S Company and about a month later was transferred to Camp H. M. Smith. Charlie Company's First Sergeant, Robert W. Burke redeployed with the company aboard USS Durham (LKA 115) on September 21, 1970. Jerry Bob Johnson received a Combat Meritorious Promotion on October 26, 1970, back dated to October 18, and was transferred to MCRD San Diego on November 18, 1970.
Any help with identification of the other crew members aboard Chatterbox 6 and contact information for those from 1st Recon that were aboard Chatterbox 6 on September 7, 1970 or other 1st Recon who would be knowledgeable of the events of that day would be greatly appreciated.
Regards and Best Wishes for a Great Memorial Day Weekend,
Tom McCaffery

Bruce Fogarty

My name is Bruce Fogarty. I have been looking for a fellow Marine that I served with in Vietnam. We were with Bravo Company, 1st recon Bn. On June 1st, 1970 Rufus Nouston was medivaced out of country after being wounded on Charley Ridge. On that day we also lost Cpl Roe Hopson. Last year I visited Roe's family in Kentucky after searching over the years. The 3-4 hours we spent together was well worth the travel. I thought Rufus lived in Houston, Texas. I keep running into dead ends. If anyone has any information could you please contact me. Thanks,
